Gas boilers

Boiler leaking water? Do this first

Total Energy Solutions · updated July 2026 · 3 min read

A leaking boiler should never be ignored. It can damage your home and points to a fault that needs fixing. Here is exactly what to do first, and what is likely causing it, for homeowners in Edinburgh and East Lothian.

Do this straight away

Turn off the boiler and the water supply to it, then mop up standing water to protect floors and electrics. Do not switch it back on until the cause is found.

What causes boiler leaks

Common causes are a failed pressure valve, a corroded pipe or heat exchanger, or a loose fitting. A pressure that keeps climbing then leaking often means the expansion vessel needs attention.
